As a teaching initiative regarding emerging technologies
from ECAL and the EPFL+ECAL Lab, a one week workshop
which included lectures and a tangible project focused on
the use of AI in industrial design, the workshop was offered
to students from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years of the Bachelor
of Industrial Design from ECAL.
The purpose of the workshop was to challenge students to
redesign a stool which was given to them both physically
and digitally, using only Midjourney, students could use
image blending or image referencing to redesign the stool
according to the concept of their choosing, with the goal of
creating a 1:1 prototype by the end of the week.
The EPFL+ECAL Lab also used the POSTER WORLD AI
system which was trained to categorize all the designs
from students according to their similarity in regards to
composition, color and texture, this created an interactive
solution to visualize all the results from the workshop to
critically analyze similarities and differences between
designs.
The students presented their results and talked about their
experience using this tool as part of their design process,
this to reflect on the future role of AI tools in design and the
challenges and benefits this technology may offer in the
future.
